Peter Steinberger, the Austrian software engineer and entrepreneur behind the acclaimed open-source AI agent framework OpenClaw, has officially joined OpenAI. The move, announced by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, signals a significant strategic push by the company into the development of advanced personal AI agents.
Steinberger will lead the development of what OpenAI is calling “the next generation of personal agents.” Altman lauded Steinberger as a “genius with a lot of amazing ideas about the future of very smart agents interacting with each other to do very useful things for people,” adding that this work is expected to become “core to our product offerings.”
OpenClaw, formerly known as Moltbot and Clawdbot, gained widespread attention as a self-hosted AI assistant capable of autonomously managing tasks such as email, calendars, and complex workflows across various platforms. Its ability to act as a “genuine digital employee” demonstrated significant potential for agentic AI systems.
The decision to join OpenAI came after Steinberger was reportedly courted by both OpenAI and Meta. In a blog post, Steinberger stated his belief that OpenAI was the “best place to continue pushing on my vision and expand its reach,” emphasizing a shared vision with the company. He previously referred to himself as “the biggest Codex advertisement show that’s unpaid,” indicating his long-standing engagement with OpenAI’s technology.
A crucial aspect of this development is the future of OpenClaw. OpenAI has committed to supporting OpenClaw as it transitions into an open-source project under a new foundation. Steinberger affirmed the importance of this arrangement, stating, “It’s always been important to me that OpenClaw stays open source and given the freedom to flourish.”
