OpenAI Introduces Workspace Agents in ChatGPT for Team Workflows

OpenAI launches workspace agents in ChatGPT, enabling teams to create shared AI agents that handle complex tasks and run continuously in the cloud.

According to openai.com, OpenAI introduced workspace agents in ChatGPT on April 22, 2024, enabling teams to create shared agents that handle complex tasks and long-running workflows within organizational permissions and controls.

Workspace agents represent an evolution of GPTs, according to the announcement. Powered by Codex, they can take on tasks including preparing reports, writing code, and responding to messages. The agents run in the cloud and continue working even when users are offline. They are designed to be shared within organizations, allowing teams to build an agent once, use it together in ChatGPT or Slack, and improve it over time.

According to openai.com, these agents are designed for workflows that depend on shared context, handoffs, and decisions across teams. They can gather context from systems, follow team processes, request approval when needed, and maintain work continuity across tools. OpenAI’s sales team reportedly uses an agent to compile call notes and account research, qualify leads, and draft follow-up emails.

The feature is available in research preview for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teachers plans, according to the announcement. Users can access it by clicking Agents in the ChatGPT sidebar and describing a team workflow. OpenAI noted that existing GPTs will remain available while teams test workspace agents, with plans to enable GPT-to-workspace-agent conversion soon.
