Google has filed a lawsuit against a Chinese cybercrime organization accused of exploiting the company’s Gemini artificial intelligence system to orchestrate a large-scale fraud operation. According to the New York Times, the tech giant alleges that the group used Gemini to create hundreds of fake corporate and government websites.
The cybercrime operation, identified as “Outsider Enterprise” according to TechCrunch, allegedly scammed hundreds of thousands of victims through coordinated attacks. TechCrunch reports that the group sent approximately 2.5 million fraudulent text messages over a span of just two weeks as part of their scheme.
The lawsuit represents Google’s effort to prevent the group from continuing to abuse its AI technology for criminal purposes. The case highlights growing concerns about the potential misuse of generative AI systems for creating convincing fraudulent content at scale.
