Agentic overlays function as thin wrapper layers that sit on top of existing REST-based services, according to the AWS announcement. These overlays transform conventional APIs into agents capable of participating in A2A interactions while simultaneously exposing REST APIs as compatible tools. This approach allows enterprises to leverage their existing infrastructure investments while adopting newer agentic architectures.
The technical collaboration between AWS and the authors emphasizes a pragmatic philosophy of “retrofit, don’t rebuild,” suggesting that organizations can modernize their systems incrementally rather than undertaking costly and disruptive complete overhauls.
