Anthropic’s Claude artificial intelligence assistant recently surged to the top of Apple’s U.S. App Store, claiming the #1 spot among free apps and dethroning OpenAI’s ChatGPT. This rapid ascent, which occurred on or around March 1, 2026, comes amidst a high-profile public dispute between Anthropic and the U.S. Department of Defense regarding the ethical deployment of AI technology.
Previously, Claude had been gaining traction, rising from outside the top 100 in late January to within the top 20 through much of February. Its climb accelerated dramatically in recent days, moving from sixth to fourth and then to second place before reaching the pinnacle of the charts. Some reports indicate it was at #42 before Super Bowl LX. Following Claude’s rise, ChatGPT was positioned at second place, with Google’s Gemini notably in third or fourth.
The significant surge in downloads appears to be directly linked to Anthropic’s public stance against the unrestricted use of its AI models for applications such as mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons systems. This principled position led to a directive from President Donald Trump for federal agencies to cease using Anthropic’s technology, and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth sought to label the company a “supply-chain risk to national security.”
In contrast, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced a separate agreement with the Pentagon to deploy its AI models within classified networks, emphasizing safeguards related to domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons. This difference in approach resonated strongly with a segment of the public. Social media platforms saw users sharing screenshots of canceled ChatGPT subscriptions and pledges to switch to Claude. Pop musician Katy Perry reportedly posted “done” on X, accompanied by a screenshot of Claude’s Pro pricing page.
An Anthropic spokesperson informed Mashable that this period has seen substantial growth, with free users increasing over 60% since January, daily sign-ups tripling since November and setting new records daily, and paid subscribers more than doubling this year. While the ethical debate served as a catalyst, Claude’s underlying capabilities, including the Claude Opus 4.6 model, which reportedly topped Artificial Analysis benchmark rankings against GPT-5.2 and Google’s Gemini, likely contributed to its appeal. The Claude iOS app, launched in May 2024, features the Claude 3 model family, chat history synchronization, and photo support, along with a voice mode for hands-free conversations.
Beyond the U.S., Claude also achieved the #1 ranking in Canada, #3 in France and Germany, #4 in the UK, #8 in Italy, and #22 in Japan on March 1, 2026.
