Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and AI startup Anthropic have announced a significant strategic partnership, combining a multi-billion dollar chips agreement with a substantial investment from AMD. The deal positions AMD to supply Anthropic with its Instinct MI450 Series GPUs, while AMD will make a strategic equity investment of up to $5 billion in the AI company.
Under the terms of the agreement, Anthropic plans to deploy up to two gigawatts (GW) of AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs within AMD Helios rack-scale solutions. The deployment of the first gigawatt is projected to commence in the first half of 2027. This infrastructure commitment represents tens of billions of dollars’ worth of AI systems, according to reports.
This marks AMD’s first direct investment in an AI company, with the equity commitment tied to Anthropic achieving specific deployment milestones. The agreement is distinct from previous AMD deals with other major AI developers like OpenAI and Meta, which involved warrants for AMD shares.
Anthropic’s compute infrastructure will feature AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs, alongside AMD EPYC “Venice” CPUs, AMD Pensando networking, and ROCm software. This expands upon Anthropic’s existing use of AMD’s earlier MI355X accelerators.
A key component of the partnership is a multi-year engineering collaboration. Anthropic will leverage its Claude AI models to optimize workloads specifically for AMD Instinct GPUs and accelerate the development of AMD’s ROCm software platform. In turn, AMD intends to broadly integrate Claude across its own engineering and product development teams.
AMD Chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “We are thrilled to deepen our partnership with Anthropic and deploy AMD Helios at gigawatt scale.” She added, “This collaboration brings together Anthropic’s leadership in frontier AI with the full strength of AMD high-performance computing. Together, we will accelerate AI adoption at scale and establish Helios as a major platform for the next generation of AI infrastructure.”
Anthropic’s Co-founder and Chief Compute Officer, Tom Brown, highlighted the strategic importance of diversifying compute resources, noting that “Running across a diversified range of hardware lets us map the right workloads to the right hardware.” This partnership is part of Anthropic’s broader multi-chip strategy, as the company already utilizes computing solutions from Google, Amazon’s Trainium chips, and Nvidia GPUs.
The deal strengthens AMD’s competitive position in the rapidly expanding AI chip market, providing a significant customer for its next-generation accelerator platforms as it vies for market share against industry leader Nvidia.
